Blog Posts v.s. Short-Video Content (TikTok, IG Reels)

In a world where people doomscroll for hours on social media apps, one must wonder if the traditional blog post still has a place in the digital world.

I don’t have an answer to that concern. However, it is something that I have had to consider while running Luke’s Antiques and Uniques. Do I spend my time writing blog articles and posts? Or do I spend time creating TikTok videos? Either way, both of these are ancillary to my main business (selling vintage and antiques). I do not rely on either platform for my business, but I use both to spread knowledge and create new connections.

For me, creating videos, even quick short-form content, is more cumbersome and time-consuming compared to writing a quick blog article.

Additionally, TikTok and IG reels prioritize new content rather than older content, which may be just as entertaining and informative. If search engines index my blog article, it has the possibility of being shown to new users for years to come. On TikTok and IG reels, the value of your videos diminishes rapidly as time passes from the original post date. Sure, these platforms may continue to suggest your video occasionally in a feed or present it in search results, but there is no doubt that these platforms are pushing new content at greater rates than years-old content.

So, in short, I plan to treat this blog as a script-writing space for my ideas for short-form videos. If I feel that I have written a good enough blog post, I will then consider turning it into videos for my other platforms. In case I never get around to making a video, then at least the blog post remains as a record of the story or knowledge that I wanted to share.
